Power Pruning – 5 minutes + 1 Tool

by Tina – Owner and Operator

We all know that we need to prune, but it’s hard to squeeze that in between picking up the kids, grocery shopping, and all of the other to do’s of daily life. So here are some super easy tips to prune quickly with one tool.

Every plan has an optimal size and shape. Just like you, when your hair gets long and out of control you need to cut it back to manage it, but unlike you; sometimes having too much extra starts to harm the plan from the inside out. Shrubs can loose leaves and even hold moisture leading to rot! Yuck.

POWER PRUNING TIPS

1. Take a pair of sheers if you have them or a good pair of industrial scissors if you don’t.

2. Start from the outside and remove the main layer foliage. approx. | 1 minute

3. Once you can see inside a bit more take your sheers and start to cut away any naked, dead, or broken branches.approx. | 3 minutes

4. Step away, is it level, round or shaped? If not, take this time to lightly trim. | approx. 1 minute

5. Voila.

If you took too much out or it’s slightly off, don’t worry in a few weeks and the space should fill in.

Now, back to the laundry and soccer practice. These 5 minute power pruning may just save the plants and encourage new healthy blooms saving you time and money in the long run.

PRO TIP:

NEVER TRIM A PLAN THAT HAS JUST STARTED TO BLOOM SUCH AS CALIFORNIAN LILLAC, IT WILL TAKE A FULL SEASON FOR BLOOMS TO RETURN.
